Dr. Amber Sergent
Kentucky Educational Development Corporation & 2022 Kentucky High School Teacher Of The Year
Dr. Amber Sergent has been bringing history to life for nearly two decades. With a few bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history, government, and education from Morehead State University and a doctorate from the University of Kentucky, she gained expertise in her field—but she’s also a lifelong learner. Right now, she’s adding a master’s in administration from Eastern Kentucky University to her resume.
As a first-generation college graduate, raised in the tobacco fields of the rural river valleys of northern Kentucky, Dr. S understands the power of education—it’s hers to keep, and she’s passionate about passing that power to her students.
She’s taught history at both the college and high school levels, worked in public schools for over a decade, and even dabbled in film production at KET. At Woodford County High School, she wasn’t just a teacher—she also led after-school tutoring, helped students recover credits, and even coached the football team academically.
This year, she’s lending her skills to the Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC), where she’s writing federal grants and leading professional development to support students, teachers, and families across the Commonwealth.
But no matter where she’s teaching, Dr. S’s passion remains the same: helping others understand history by focusing on the real people who shaped it. Forget memorizing names and dates—her classes are about stories, struggles, and the power of ordinary people. She doesn’t teach heroes or villains, just real human beings making choices that changed the world.
Her goal? To spark curiosity, challenge perspectives, and inspire the next generation. Because students don’t just learn history in her classroom—they learn they have the power to make history. They change lives because they have changed hers.
